One word that explains why the world feels so off nowadays
Feeling like the world is crumbling while everyone pretends it's fine? That disconnect has a name: hypernormalization. Coined by historian Alexei Yurchak and later explored in Adam Curtis' 2016 documentary of the same name, it describes when failing systems are upheld as if they still work. Digital anthropologist Rahaf Harfoush explains, "Your vibes are not off. Your instincts are not off. There's a term for it."
